Meanwhile, the potential impacts of its optical radiation on human eyes and skin have drawn high attention from both the industry and consumers.
As a dedicated standard for photobiological safety, IEC 62471‑5 provides authoritative technical foundations for evaluating the optical‑radiation safety of projectors, acting as a “safety passport” for products entering global markets.

The IEC 62471 series, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission, constitutes a general evaluation system for the photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems. Among them, IEC 62471‑5:2015 Photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems — Part 5: Projectors is the vertical extension of the standard specifically for image‑projector products.This standard explicitly covers projectors with laser illumination complying with embedded‑laser safety requirements, as well as LCD‑ or MEMS‑based projection systems using visible‑light illumination. It excludes laser display products using collimated scanning beams, ultraviolet projectors and infrared projectors. Its core objective is to establish a risk‑group classification system, standardise test and measurement conditions, and define safety requirements including user‑related information for manufacturers. This safeguards safe operation of cinema projectors, data projectors, home‑use projectors and other relevant devices.
IEC 62471‑5 sets detailed and stringent requirements for photobiological‑safety testing of projectors, focusing on the dimensions below:
Based on potential hazards arising from emitted optical radiation, the standard categorises projectors into different risk groups (Risk Group: Risk‑Free, RG1 Low Risk, RG2 Moderate Risk, RG3 High Risk). This classification determines acceptable emission limits, and directly governs required user instructions and protective measures to be provided by manufacturers.
Under test conditions specified in Clause 5 of the standard, laboratories measure radiation levels at defined distances. Measured accessible‑emission values are compared against the specified Accessible Emission Limits (AEL) to accurately determine the hazard category of the projector.
Testing also addresses projector‑specific functions, including soft‑start safety‑function testing (to avoid momentary high‑intensity radiation), optional safety‑function assessment, hazard‑distance measurement and user‑information verification. These tests ensure optical radiation remains within controllable limits even under atypical usage scenarios.
The standard IEC 62471‑5 testing cycle ranges from 7 to 15 working days. Actual duration depends on product complexity (e.g. laser‑light‑source configuration), scope of test items and whether retesting is required.
