1、 Standard Background and Positioning
IEC 60825-1 is the basic standard for laser product safety published by the International Electrotechnical Commission, with the full name "Safety of laser products - Part 1: Equipment classification and requirements". It specifies the classification, technical requirements, testing methods, and labeling standards for laser products. For laser stage lights, this is the core safety standard that products must meet when entering the international market, especially when exporting to regions such as the European Union, North America, Japan, and South Korea, which is usually the basis for certification compliance.
The latest version of this standard is IEC 60825-1:2014+A1:2024, with Amendment 1 released in 2024, which updates some technical terms. Different countries or regions may adopt corresponding national versions, for example, the European Union adopts EN 60825-1, and China adopts GB 7247.1 (equivalent technical content adopts IEC standards).
2、 Laser hazard classification
IEC 60825-1 classifies laser products into several levels based on their level of harm, which is the core process of certification. For laser lights commonly used in stage performances and light shows, they are usually designed as Class 3R, Class 3B, or Class 4 products because these devices require sufficient output power to achieve long-distance, high brightness visual effects.
Laser products from Class 1 to Class 2 have lower hazards and are commonly found in ordinary indicators or scanning devices; However, due to power requirements, it is almost impossible for stage laser lights to remain at a low level. This also means that there are stricter safety requirements for the operation and use environment of stage laser lights, such as requiring professionally trained operators, controlling the beam path to avoid direct exposure to the audience's eyes, and so on.
3、 Main technical evaluation content
Certification testing mainly revolves around the following aspects:
Radiation safety assessment: Determine the wavelength, power, radiation level and other parameters of the laser output to confirm that the product meets the limit requirements of the corresponding level. The assessment covers the achievable emission limit (AEL), radiation measurement conditions, and radiation levels at different accessible locations.
Structural and design requirements: including protective casing, safety interlock, key control switch (applicable to high-grade lasers), remote interlock connector, beam terminator, etc. For high-power stage laser lights, it is usually required to have a key switch and a remote emergency stop interface to ensure that the laser output can be quickly cut off during the performance.
Software and electronic control: Modern laser stage lights are increasingly integrating scanning systems and software control. The standard has clear requirements for laser scanning failure protection, automatic power reduction or shutdown mechanism under fault conditions, to prevent single point high-power beam from being stuck due to scanning faults.
Labels and instructions: Laser grade warning labels, classification labels, and corresponding safety signs must be prominently displayed on the casing, accompanied by a detailed user manual explaining safety precautions for installation, operation, and maintenance.
4、 Combining with the special requirements of the performance industry
In practical applications, stage laser lights not only need to meet the product safety requirements of IEC 60825-1, but also need to be combined with the special regulations of the performance industry, such as the relevant guidelines of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) and the American Performance Safety Association, as well as the approval requirements for laser use in public performances in various regions. Many regions require performance organizers to submit laser product certification documents (IEC 60825-1 test reports) as part of the approval materials.
5、 Common compliance difficulties and suggestions
Stage laser lights often encounter the following problems in practical certification: insufficient response time of scanning protection system, non-standard label position or content, lack of necessary safety warnings in the instruction manual, remote interlocking interface not meeting requirements, etc. It is recommended to introduce standard requirements in the early stages of product design and maintain communication with certification agencies to avoid increasing costs and time for later rectification.
Additionally, it should be noted that different markets have varying degrees of control over laser products. For example, in addition to CE certification (LVD directive referencing EN 60825-1), the European Union also involves requirements such as EMC and RoHS; The US market may involve FDA's laser product declaration (21 CFR 1040.10/11). A complete export compliance strategy should consider these requirements together.
