Guidelines for registering energy efficiency labels for monitors in the UK

2026-10-16 Industry News

First, distinguish between two systems

Great Britain region (England, Scotland, Wales): There is no mandatory public product database like the EU EPREL. Registration is actually a process of "creating labels+retaining technical documents" - generating labels through the UK government's official online label creation service, and suppliers (or their authorized UK representatives) keep energy efficiency test reports and product information sheets for future reference. The "EPREL-UK official database" claimed by some online service providers is currently not a publicly available mandatory registration portal, and is subject to the official services of GOV.UK.

Northern Ireland: Constrained by the Northern Ireland Protocol and still following EU rules, suppliers must first register their products in the EU EPREL database and regenerate them into labels with EU logos. Products sold simultaneously in two markets must be compliant separately.

Preparation before registration: energy efficiency testing

Testing must be completed before creating tags. According to the UK Energy Efficiency Regulations (SI 2021/745, Electronic Display Clause) and corresponding testing standards, the monitor measures the power consumption when turned on in SDR and HDR modes, and calculates the Energy Efficiency Index EEI-label to determine the level; Devices with automatic brightness control (ABC) function can receive a 10% power consumption deduction if they meet the conditions, and high color gamut enhanced performance displays (EPD) can receive additional energy allowance values. The testing cycle is usually 5-10 working days.

Step 1: Enter the official creation service

Visit the "Create an energy label" page on GOV.UK (gov.uk/guidance/create an energy label) and click "Start now" to begin. This service is free and can generate labels online. It also provides an API for enterprises to directly generate labels in bulk from the product information management system.

Step 2: Select product category

Select "Televisions and electronic displays" from the product category list.

Step 3: Fill in label information

Fill in each item according to the system prompts:

Supplier name or trademark, model identification code;

Product information table webpage link - the link must point to a public, freely accessible website that only contains the product information table;

Energy efficiency parameters: SDR mode energy efficiency level (A-G) and energy consumption per 1000 hours of startup mode (kWh); If HDR is supported, the energy efficiency level and energy consumption per 1000 hours of HDR mode need to be filled in; Horizontal/vertical resolution pixel values; Screen diagonal visible size (centimeters and inches);

Choose the output format (PNG/JPEG or PDF).

Step 4: Generate and download tags

After confirming that the information is correct, generate tags and download them. The tag elements include: A-G energy efficiency rating (dark green to red gradient scale), supplier name, model, energy consumption data, UK flag, English text, and QR code. The minimum size of the label is usually 36mm × 72mm, and the 20mm × 54mm version can be used when the product is too small.

Step 5: Placement and Retention

Generating labels is just the beginning, it also needs to be implemented synchronously: attaching printed labels in prominent positions on products and minimum sales packaging; Display labels at physical store sales points; Display labels and indicate energy efficiency levels on the details page of e-commerce platforms and any advertisements that mention specific models; Accompanying product information sheet; Properly store energy efficiency test reports and other technical documents for regulatory agencies to verify the accuracy of labels and product information sheets.

Compliance Risk Warning

Providing false energy efficiency rating documents is illegal in the UK and is subject to accountability under the Energy Information Regulations 2011 and the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 (DMCCA). In addition, any energy efficiency labels that may mislead consumers shall not be displayed on products, and platforms (such as Amazon UK) will also verify the authenticity of labels and energy consumption information. Non compliant listings may be taken down. When the product is redesigned or the energy consumption parameters change, it is necessary to retest and generate new labels.

Suggested processing cycle

Non UK domestic enterprises can handle it themselves, with an overall cycle of about 2-4 weeks (including sample delivery and testing). Common issues include: the product information table webpage does not meet the requirement of "page only containing information table", the tag parameters are inconsistent with the test report, and EPREL registration is missing in the Northern Ireland market. It is recommended to plan in advance and verify each model.
