Leveraging our core and differentiated strengths, we provide you with high-quality, comprehensive technology services
More
We provide professional optical product testing services (laser product safety testing and performance parameter testing, photobiological safety testing for non‑laser products), as well as energy efficiency testing services (EU ErP energy efficiency testing, US DOE energy efficiency testing, California CEC energy efficiency testing), among others.
If you have requirements for laser products (laser product safety testing and laser performance parameter testing) and energy efficiency testing (EU ErP energy efficiency testing, US DOE energy efficiency, California CEC energy efficiency, UK energy efficiency testing), please feel free to email us at: admin@ctnt-cert.com
1、 Standard positioning
IEC 60335-2-27 is a specialized standard for Part 2 of the IEC 60335 series, known as "Safety of household and similar electrical appliances - Part 2-27: Special requirements for appliances that expose the skin to light radiation". It cannot be used alone and must be implemented in conjunction with the general safety standard IEC 60335-1 to address the exclusive risks of optical radiation that cannot be covered by the general standard.
2、 Applicable products and voltage range
Object: Electrical appliances with light radiation emitters for skin irradiation, with wavelengths ranging from 100 nm to 1 mm (UV, visible, infrared).
Typical products: sunbathing equipment, sun lamps, LED phototherapy masks, red/infrared skincare devices, etc.
Voltage: Single phase appliances ≤ 250 V, other appliances (including DC power supply and battery power supply) ≤ 480 V.
Venue: Home, beauty salon, sunbathing salon, and similar commercial settings.
3、 Explicitly excluded instruments
Ordinary skin/hair care equipment → Follow IEC 60335-2-23
Sauna heating equipment, infrared cabin → Follow IEC 60335-2-53
Medical beauty equipment containing laser and strong pulsed light → Follow IEC 60335-2-113
Medical Devices → Follow IEC 60601 Series
UV equipment for non tanning purposes (such as sterilization and curing)
Special equipment that requires additional requirements for corrosive/explosive environments or for vehicles, ships, and aircraft
4、 Core security dimension
Radiation safety: Limit the effective ultraviolet irradiance and exposure dose, follow the IEC 62471 photobiological safety concept, and prevent sunburn, eye damage, and excessive cumulative exposure.
Electrical safety: protection against electric shock, leakage current, electrical strength, grounding continuity and creepage distance, covering normal and single fault conditions.
Thermal safety: During normal use, the temperature rise of the touchable surface is limited to prevent low-temperature burns caused by prolonged skin contact with the mask, bed, and handle.
Mechanical and structural safety: stability, mechanical strength, shell protection, lamp/filter fixing method to avoid tipping, cracking, and accidental contact with the transmitter.
Abnormal and abnormal operation: Simulate scenarios such as timed failure, filter damage, and fan shutdown to verify that there will be no fire or radiation loss of control.
Identification and instructions: must include "Do not look directly at the light source", wear goggles, recommended exposure distance, prohibited groups, and exposure schedule.
5、 Key points of version evolution (2024 7th edition)
Align with IEC 60335-1:2020, with some annotations converted to normative requirements.
Add accessible surface temperature limits (Chapter 11).
The exposure plan attachment DD has been converted into a normative attachment, and the instructions for using links have been refined.
Clarify the usage of Test Probe 18 in salon devices; The tanning function UV is not applicable to certain judgments in 32.2.
The 7th edition (2024) replaces the 6th edition of 2019 and incorporates the 2025 errata.
6、 Key points of eye protection and exposure control
High brightness UV equipment must be labeled with "Strong light warning, do not stare at the emitter".
The accompanying goggles must have a limited light transmittance, and the instruction manual requires them to be worn when in use.
The exposure distance is controlled by the structure or clearly marked; The UV equipment is scheduled according to the skin type and minimum erythema dose (MED), and the irradiation is stopped when redness and swelling occur.
Taboo population: Minors, individuals with a history of sunburn/multiple moles/skin cancer, and those taking photosensitive drugs are not allowed to use.
7、 Compliance purposes and boundaries
It is one of the commonly used criteria for the admission of light radiation home appliances in CB system, CE, RCM and other systems, but specific markets may have differences in national standards (such as EU EN, Australia New Zealand AS/NZS versions) and health regulatory limits.
The standard only covers "common foreseeable hazards" and does not replace medical evaluation, specialized laser safety systems, or national public health bans.
When enterprises conduct testing, they usually combine IEC 60335-1+IEC 60335-2-27+IEC 62471 for evaluation.
8、 One sentence summary
IEC 60335-2-27="Safety specific standard for face/body lighting appliances with lamps", in addition to the general electrical safety of household appliances, additionally nails UV/infrared dose, eye protection, skin temperature rise, and exposure time limit. It is one of the main standards for the compliance of phototherapy beauty devices and tanning equipment for overseas use.
