1、 What is the standard
IEC 62471-5:2015 "Photobiological Safety of Lamps and Lamp Systems Part 5: Image Projectors" is a photobiological safety standard specifically developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission for projectors, which specifies the requirements for projector radiation safety assessment, risk group classification, testing and measurement conditions, and the requirement for manufacturers to provide user information.
The corresponding national standard is GB/T 30117.5-2019; When exporting to the European Union, EN 62471-5 is an important component of CE certification (under the Low Voltage Directive LVD).
2、 Scope of application
Projectors using DLP, LCD, LCoS and other display technologies;
LED light source projector;
Laser projectors that use laser light sources but comply with the requirements of clause 4.4 of IEC 60825-1:2014 (visible light emission is excluded from laser product classification), such as laser+MEMS or non scanning display systems;
Cinema projectors, data/business projectors, home projectors, and micro projectors are all covered.
Not applicable: Laser display products using scanning collimated laser beams, pure ultraviolet projectors, pure infrared projectors.
3、 Why do we need to do it
EU market access: Photobiosafety assessment is a mandatory requirement for CE certification. Without a compliance report, CE marking cannot be affixed, and there is a risk of customs clearance failure and delisting;
The particularity of laser projectors: the laser light source part is evaluated according to IEC 60825-1, and the visible light image part projected needs to be evaluated according to IEC 62471-5, often meeting both standards;
Health and compliance risks: Projectors are often used in dark environments, causing dilated pupils and prolonged viewing. Blue light (415-455nm) may damage the retina; Testing can avoid recall and litigation risks;
Market competitiveness: T Ü V Rheinland and T Ü V S Ü D's low blue light certification are based on IEC 62471 technology.
4、 Risk level classification
RG0 (exemption level): does not cause light hazards even under extreme conditions;
RG1 (low risk level): does not cause harm under normal use conditions;
RG2 (medium risk level): rely on the human eye's glare avoidance response to strong light to avoid harm, do not stare directly for a long time;
RG3 (high-risk level): Immediate exposure can cause harm.
Consumer grade projectors typically require RG0 or RG1; If it is RG2/RG3, warning information (such as "Avoid direct eye contact with light sources") should be labeled in the packaging and instructions.
5、 Main testing items
Photochemical UV hazard (200-400nm): evaluate the damage to the skin and eyes;
Near ultraviolet hazards to the eyes (315-400nm);
Retinal blue light hazard (300-700nm, with a focus on the 415-455nm band): a core project for projector testing;
Retinal heat hazard (380-1400nm);
Infrared radiation hazards to the eyes (780-3000nm);
Skin heat hazard (380-3000nm).
Measurement points: Unlike the general lighting standard (200mm measurement distance), IEC 62471-5 specifies a classification measurement distance of 1 meter, which is closer to the actual viewing scene; It is also necessary to determine the apparent light source angle to calculate radiance. In addition, it also includes "soft start" safety function verification, hazard distance testing, and user information verification.
6、 Certification process and cycle
The general process is: preliminary consultation and product classification → sample preparation (usually 2-3 sets of mass-produced prototypes, accompanied by technical documents such as specifications and light source parameters) → laboratory spectral measurement and hazard weighted assessment → issuing a report (specifying the risk level).
The regular cycle is about 5-15 working days, depending on the type of light source (laser light source testing is more complex), the number of projects, and whether rectification is needed. It can be expedited. It is recommended to choose a laboratory with CNAS/CMA qualifications, and the report can be used for CE, CB and other certifications, as well as FDA laser report support.
7、 Precautions
The report itself has no fixed validity period, but if there are changes in key components such as the light source model, optical engine, brightness output, etc. of the product, a reassessment is required;
Laser projectors need to consider both IEC 60825-1 (light source body) and IEC 62471-5 (projecting visible light) simultaneously;
It is recommended to conduct pre testing during the research and development phase to detect issues with excessive blue light or radiance in advance, in order to avoid delays in market launch due to failed formal testing.
